SplunkLive! SF 2015: A Recap

Screen Shot 2015-03-23 at 12.56.28 PMWe had a record breaking day in the bay at our 8th annual SplunkLive! San Francisco with over 900 attendees! This all new track style format – offering 16 different sessions in a single day – provided valuable content for Splunk newbies and seasoned Splunk customer champions alike.

Highlights included:

  • Godfrey Sullivan, Splunk Chairman and CEO, was joined on stage by Haiyan Song, SVP of Security Markets, and Snehal Antani, Splunk CTO. Haiyan covered the recent Caspida acquisition and the addition of data science-driven Behavioral Analytics to the industry’s most powerful analytics-enabled SIEM solution. Snehal Antani rounded out the keynote by discussing the evolution of IT; transitioning from a back office function, to a core part of the value the company delivers to its customers and “earning a seat at the table.”
  • Customer presentations from Symantec for Security, Sephora for ITOps and Equinix for Cloud and Enterprise Security.
  • We closed out the day with our experts panel which included our customer speakers and Splunk experts. Our attendees submitted questions via Twitter throughout the day and our CTO Snehal Antani was our moderator and served them up to our esteemed panel.

Evan Wayne, vice president of Store Systems and IT Operations for Sephora, explained how Splunk has been used to monitor both their in-store retail systems (mobile point-of-sale and ColorIQ systems) and online e-commerce sites to maximize uptime and successful transactions. With Splunk, failed customer transactions alone have fallen by 95%. The result has been a significant growth in customer satisfaction and increased transaction completion rate leading to revenue growth.

Symantec Customer Presentation

Symantec talked about how they created a new security paradigm and went to a “social logging” environment offering Splunk for all IT Operations and Engineering to “go social” with logging and increase security. Having one global logging solution allows them to eliminate issues, be collaborative and analyze and react to new vulnerabilities they didn’t even know existed! Their recipe for log collection: “add Splunk and stir for viral adoption”.

Brian Lillie, the CIO of Equinix discussed the advantages of a cloud-based model compared to an on-premise SIEM deployment and how they achieved their goals with Splunk Cloud and ES. Equinix deployed a world class SIEM/security intelligence solution as a cloud-based service, transforming 20 billion raw events into 12,000 correlations and ultimately 14 actionable alerts.

In addition to our customer presentations we had 13 breakout sessions and we also debuted some brand new sessions including Best Practices for Scoping Infections and Disrupting Breaches led by our Chief Security Evangelist Monzy Merza. Another new Advanced session was added titled Monitoring Splunk: S.o.S, DMC, and Beyond led by David Veuve, Sr. Sales Engineer, Security.

The content at SplunkLive! San Francisco is really just a taste of what’s to come at .conf2015 our 6th Annual Worldwide Users Conference in Las Vegas, September 19-21st. For more information and to register go to http://conf.splunk.com.

As a long time user, I much appreciated the new format of this SplunkLive. Earlier always seemed much more focused on the new users or those just looking. Having the individual sessions in the different areas made it valuable for the experienced attendees as well.
